Transport scheme support extended to ease fuel costs
Ministers at the Department of Transport have secured Cabinet approval to prolong the Road Transporters Support Scheme (RTSS) for an additional two months, covering September and October 2026. This extension involves a funding allocation of €73 million aimed at assisting haulage and passenger transport operators struggling with elevated diesel costs.

The extension recognises the essential role these operators play in maintaining supply chains, ensuring goods remain available on shelves, businesses receive supplies, exports continue, and people stay connected to work and services. Alongside the continuation of reduced excise duties on petrol and diesel until May 2027, the RTSS seeks to alleviate the financial impact stemming from the Middle East conflict.

Since its launch in May 2026, the RTSS has supported licensed hauliers, own-account operators, and commercial coach services with fuel cost challenges. Over 4,400 applications representing more than 31,500 vehicles have been submitted, with most payments already issued. The Department plans to finalise processing of payments for September and October before the end of the year, with no need for applicants to reapply.
