Technology transforms calf rearing in Cork farm
Cork-based dairy-beef farmer Philip O'Neill has significantly modernised his calf-to-store beef enterprise through the introduction of an automatic calf feeder. Operating alongside a tillage business and working off-farm, Philip manages his enterprise in partnership with his mother Denise, making labour efficiency essential during the busy spring period.

Philip shared insights on the motivations behind investing in the feeder, the practical experiences of its first season, and how it has transformed daily calf management. The technology has not only reduced labour demands but also enabled early detection of health issues, contributing to strong calf performance and wellbeing.

Teagasc Advisor Alan Carey emphasised broader lessons for dairy-beef producers, advising a thorough review of labour needs, health protocols, housing, and nutrition before the upcoming season. He also pointed to ways farmers can manage input costs and explore investment opportunities, including available supports through the Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme (TAMS), to enhance efficiency and profitability.
