Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien has officially completed the pension reform process for CIÉ by signing the necessary Statutory Instruments, marking the conclusion of a significant and protracted effort. This development enables a 5% pension uplift for almost 5,000 eligible CIÉ pensioners, delivering a much-anticipated improvement in their retirement income.
The reforms were the result of extensive collaboration between the CIÉ Group and the CIÉ Trade Union Group, which includes unions such as Connect, NBRU, SIPTU, TAAS, and Unite. Following a supportive ballot among union members in August 2025, the proposals received approval from both Minister O’Brien and Minister for Public Expenditure, Jack Chambers, after thorough scrutiny in accordance with the Transport Act 1950 and governance codes.
Key elements of the package include the introduction of a defined contribution scheme for new employees and the closure of existing defined benefit schemes to new entrants. Current members will experience certain changes, and eligible pensioners will benefit from the approved increase. These measures aim to enhance the financial sustainability of CIÉ pensions, balancing the needs of retired, current, and future employees while managing associated risks. CIÉ Holding Company will oversee the implementation of these reforms. Further details are available on the official CIÉ website.
