Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon TD, has highlighted a series of remarkable achievements delivered by his Department during the opening hundred days of Ireland's European Union Presidency. Speaking on the milestone, the Minister emphasised how the leadership team has successfully steered critical agricultural and fisheries policies forward to benefit communities both across Ireland and throughout the wider European Union.
A standout triumph during this period was the successful securing of a partial general approach on the common fisheries policy multiannual financial framework sectoral regulation at the September Agrifish Council. This vital agreement paves the way for upcoming trilogues with the European Parliament, aiming to modernise the European fleet, facilitate the green energy transition, and champion generational renewal for fishermen and women. Furthermore, the Irish Presidency remains firmly on track to achieve a landmark agreement among European agriculture ministers regarding the key terms of the forthcoming Common Agricultural Policy by the end of October.
Beyond these legislative milestones, the Department has actively chaired fifty working party meetings and hosted pivotal ministerial gatherings in July and September to address livestock sustainability and generational renewal. Looking ahead before the presidency concludes, five additional high-profile events will take place in Ireland, including crucial discussions on plant health, forestry, and the Global Bioeconomy Summit scheduled for 20 to 21 October.
