James O’Sullivan, a participant in the DairyBeef 500 programme, will open his farm near Union Hall, Co. Cork, for a walk on 3 September at 5.30 pm, demonstrating a labour-efficient and profitable dairy-beef system. Over the past four years, James has boosted both profitability and labour efficiency, achieving net profits exceeding €2,600 per hectare during the beef price rise in 2025.
Balancing farm duties with his work as an AI technician and a busy family life, James has invested in new equipment, a shed, and a maize pit to streamline daily operations. Managing approximately 95 Angus steers and heifers on 31 hectares of mainly free-draining coastal land, he faces challenges such as drought, early cattle housing, and the need for extra silage.
During the farm walk, attendees will learn about James’s approaches to winter fodder shortages, grass management, and calf health improvements, including vaccination and ventilation upgrades. Demonstrations will include Grasstec’s SKAI sprayer, which targets weeds precisely, and ABP’s stock assessment for finishing cattle. The event also offers discussions on the construction of new farm facilities under TAMS, with free burgers provided by ABP. Participation is open and free of charge.
