Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris has expressed his approval of recent research from the Banking & Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI), which shows that four out of five adults would be interested in opening a new Investment Account. This research was published on 20 August 2026 and reflects strong public enthusiasm for more accessible savings and investment options.
The Investment Account framework, inspired by a European Commission recommendation, aims to make investing simpler, more transparent, and more beneficial for everyday Irish people. Mr Harris emphasised that while Irish citizens are diligent savers, much of their money currently earns little to no interest and is diminished by inflation. This new account would help individuals grow their savings, supporting financial resilience for events such as home purchases or education expenses.
Mr Harris also highlighted that the account must be straightforward to open and understand, offer meaningful incentives, and provide flexible access to funds. It will be backed by robust consumer protections and clear information. To assist public understanding, two financial literacy ambassadors were appointed over the summer to raise awareness ahead of the Investment Account’s planned launch. Further details will be outlined in the Budget on 6 October 2026.
