Kerry dairy farmer claims national environmental sustainability crown
William Dennehy, a progressive dairy farmer from Currow, County Kerry, has triumphed by securing the overall Teagasc and FBD Environmentally Sustainable Farmer of the Year title for 2026. Recognised for masterfully balancing profitability with rigorous ecological protection, William operates a spring-calving herd that prioritises grazed grass, impressive milk solids, and advanced breeding metrics like the Dairy Beef Index. Siobhan Kavanagh, chair of the judging panel, praised the family farm for exemplifying how modern agriculture can thrive while actively nurturing the surrounding landscape.

Environmental innovation sits at the heart of the Dennehy operation, highlighted by active participation in the Clover150 project and a dramatic reduction in chemical nitrogen reliance. Soil fertility is meticulously managed, with the vast majority of land achieving optimal pH levels, while natural solutions such as riparian buffer zones, riverside hedging, and a bespoke reed bed safeguard the nearby Brown Flesk River. Furthermore, William has embraced cutting-edge decision support tools and climate initiatives, ensuring his enterprise remains at the forefront of sustainable food production without compromising on efficiency or animal welfare.

Beyond his commercial and environmental achievements, William demonstrates a deep commitment to his local community through social farming, welcoming individuals with intellectual disabilities to the holding each week. Celebrating his victory at an awards ceremony in County Laois, the Kerry farmer continues to inspire the agricultural sector by proving that resilience, biodiversity, and profitability can successfully go hand in hand. Further details and video resources regarding the national awards programme are available on the official Teagasc website.
