Generational renewal week highlights future farming pathways
Generational Renewal Week 2026 took place from Monday, 7 to Friday, 11 September, uniting farmers, farm families, and the wider agricultural community in a series of events centred on planning for the future of Irish farming. The week aimed to create opportunities for the next generation and provide practical support as farm businesses evolve.

Ruth Fennell, a Teagasc farm management specialist, emphasised that generational renewal extends beyond succession or asset transfer. It involves equipping farm families with comprehensive information, advice, and tools to make informed decisions about education, career prospects, pension planning, business development, finance access, and collaborative farming models.

The programme included webinars, farm walks, in-person engagements, and new video content showcasing real-life experiences and practical guidance. Highlights included a series of three videos on Education, Pension Planning, and Business Planning and Access to Finance, alongside opportunities for farmers to consult directly with Teagasc specialists at the Newford suckler herd Open Day in County Roscommon.

Additional events demonstrated collaborative farming approaches such as partnerships, share farming, and land leasing, illustrating alternative routes into farming and sustainable business development. Notably, over 50 Teagasc advisers visited primary schools nationwide, delivering interactive sessions to inspire young people about careers in agriculture.

The week opened with a live webinar chaired by Emma-Louise Coffey featuring families and farm management experts discussing succession. Subsequent webinars addressed topics like the Nursing Home Support Scheme with Ultan Hynes from the HSE, collaborative farming options showcased by young farmer Kieran Kennedy in Nenagh, and tax reliefs with practical case studies.

The week concluded with a farm walk at the Tyner family farm in Shillelagh, County Wicklow, sharing experiences of integrating the next generation through Registered and Succession Farm Partnerships. Generational Renewal Week 2026 provided a valuable platform for farmers and families to initiate conversations, explore diverse options, and plan positively for the future of their farm enterprises.
