Frank O’Mara reappointed as director of Teagasc
The Teagasc Authority has officially reappointed Professor Frank O’Mara as Director of Teagasc for a second five-year term, which begins today, 1 October 2026. This appointment was approved by the Authority with the formal consent of Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Martin Heydon TD, alongside Minister for Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Services, Reform and Digitalisation Jack Chambers TD.

Liam Herlihy, chairperson of Teagsc, noted that the organisation has progressed significantly under Professor O’Mara’s guidance over the past five years, tackling major challenges within farming. During his initial tenure, which began in 2021, he oversaw the implementation of the 'Teagasc Together' strategy while championing diversity, digital transformation, and people development. Key milestones from this period included the launch of the Teagasc Climate Action Strategy, the expansion of the Signpost Programme, and the completion of the National Agricultural Sustainability Research and Innovation Centre at Johnstown Castle.

Looking ahead to the next half-decade, the primary focus will centre on strengthening the competitiveness and sustainability of Irish agriculture through the newly established 'Innovating for Impact' strategy. Expressing his gratitude upon his reappointment, Professor O’Mara emphasised that the organisation will remain an independent driver of productivity, environmental sustainability, and sector attractiveness by empowering the wider agri-food community.
