Essential preparations for the upcoming dairy drying off period
With the drying off period approaching for many spring-calving dairy herds, Teagasc Dairy Specialist Mark Treacy has emphasised that now is the optimal time for producers to begin their preparations. This phase is critical for resting the mammary system and provides a vital window to address somatic cell count (SCC) issues through targeted management and the appropriate use of long-acting dry cow antibiotics.

Farmers are encouraged to utilise the CellCheck Report available via their ICBF accounts to analyse past performance. If more than 10% of a herd shows a new infection rate, it is essential to re-evaluate winter accommodation standards and calving hygiene. Furthermore, where cure rates fall below 85%, producers should consult with their veterinary practitioners to identify chronic cases and determine the most suitable treatment protocols for the upcoming season.

To ensure decisions are based on accurate data, milk recording should be scheduled so that results are no more than 30 days old at the time of drying off. Conducting culture and sensitivity testing on milk samples will help identify specific bacterial challenges, ensuring that chosen treatments are effective. Detailed guidance and further management tips are available on the official Teagasc website.
