A landmark event aimed at strengthening the future of Irish farming will take place on Thursday, 22 October at Teagasc Ashtown, Dublin 15. The Knowledge Transfer Conference 2026, jointly organised by Teagasc and University College Dublin, will focus on how agricultural advice, education and research can equip farmers to meet the demands of modern agriculture. Designed for advisors, educators, policymakers and students, the conference will tackle pressing issues such as farm succession, water quality, livestock safety, digital skills and farmer wellbeing, while also examining the role of advisory services in supporting new technologies and sustainable practices.
The programme will feature discussions on critical topics including the impact of bovine TB on farming communities, the experiences of women in agriculture, and strategies to encourage the adoption of innovative farming methods. Keynote speakers will include Dr Matt Benge from the University of Florida, Wexford tillage farmer Don Somers—winner of the Teagasc FBD Environmental Sustainability Award 2025—and Aoibheann O’Brien, Co-Founder and Director of Development and Innovation at FoodCloud.
Mark Gibson, Head of Teagasc Outreach and Innovation, highlighted the importance of the event: “Agricultural advisors and educators play a crucial role in guiding farmers towards technologies that improve both environmental and economic sustainability. This conference offers a vital platform to explore these opportunities and bring together a diverse network of national and international experts.” Professor Monica Gorman of UCD added that the future of Ireland’s farming sector relies on continuous innovation in advisory support to help farm families navigate the challenges ahead.
