National Transport Authority outlines major public transport accessibility improvements
Transport authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to making Ireland's public transport system fully inclusive following an address to the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Disability Matters. Chief executive Anne Shaw, alongside accessibility officer Naomi Rooney and public transport services director Jeremy Ryan, outlined how significant capital investments have been channeled into upgrading vehicles, infrastructure, and passenger support systems since 2022.

Substantial progress has been achieved across both bus and rail networks, including the rollout of wheelchair-accessible vehicles, newly installed concrete bus stop platforms, and enhanced station lifts. Complementary programmes such as the JAM Card scheme, the "Please Offer Me A Seat" initiative, and specialized travel training have been deployed nationwide to empower passengers with diverse physical and invisible needs. Furthermore, the expansion of wheelchair-accessible taxis and specialized facilities like the Wayfinding Centre continue to foster greater independence for commuters.

While acknowledging that ongoing challenges remain, transport officials emphasized that inclusion remains central to future planning and capital investment. The agency stated that it will continue working closely alongside disability representative organizations and government bodies to ensure continuous enhancements across every facet of the national transport infrastructure.
