Ministers seek public input on national maritime pollution strategy
Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien and Minister of State Seán Canney have officially launched a comprehensive review of the National Maritime Oil and HNS Spill Contingency Plan. Originally established in 2020, this framework serves as the primary mechanism for coordinating interagency responses to maritime casualties and pollution incidents occurring along the Irish coastline.

The Irish Coast Guard is now inviting members of the public and industry stakeholders to contribute their perspectives on the current strategy. This initiative particularly encourages participation from those involved in tourism, coastal business, and environmental conservation to ensure that future planning reflects both modern technological advancements and international best practices for marine safety.

To facilitate informed feedback, the Coast Guard has released an Issues Paper detailing the legislative foundations and incident command systems currently in place. Interested parties are encouraged to review these documents and submit their observations via the portal available on the official government website to help safeguard the long-term health of Ireland’s marine habitats.
