MetroLink advances key Dublin Airport infrastructure works
Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), representing MetroLink, in partnership with daa and the National Transport Authority (NTA), has launched the procurement process for a critical package of works at Dublin Airport under the M120 Framework. This contract encompasses the construction of the Dublin Airport station box, tunnel portals, and other related civil engineering tasks, alongside foundation and retaining wall works at Glasnevin Station. TII is managing the procurement, coordinating closely with daa and other stakeholders to ensure smooth delivery within the operational airport environment.

The announcement was marked by a photocall at Dublin Airport attended by Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien, NTA CEO Anne Shaw, TII CEO Lorcan O’Connor, Fingal County Council CEO AnnMarie Farrelly, and daa’s Chief Commercial and Development Officer Vincent Harrison. Minister O’Brien highlighted the collaborative effort between transport and state agencies to deliver the project safely and efficiently, emphasising MetroLink’s role in addressing congestion, supporting housing, economic growth, and reducing emissions. Anne Shaw noted the importance of MetroLink as part of a broader strategy to integrate public transport and meet the needs of a growing population.

Lorcan O’Connor described the station box as a foundational element enabling further tunnelling and construction activities, stressing the importance of sequencing and safety. Vincent Harrison affirmed daa’s commitment to facilitating the project within a live airport setting, aiming to create a fully integrated multi-modal transport hub. AnnMarie Farrelly welcomed the development, recognising MetroLink’s potential to transform North Dublin’s economy and connectivity, providing a direct 25-minute rail link from Swords to Dublin City.

The M120 Framework procurement includes two lots: Lot 1 for large-scale works exceeding €50 million, including the airport station box and tunnel portals; Lot 2 for smaller projects under €50 million, such as the Glasnevin retaining walls and foundations. The process involves a two-stage selection: prequalification and invitation to negotiate, with up to three tenderers appointed per lot. This framework supports not only MetroLink but may also serve Iarnród Éireann’s civil engineering needs near Glasnevin.

MetroLink, Ireland’s first fully automated metro system, will span approximately 19km, linking Swords to Charlemont via Dublin Airport and the city centre. It represents a transformative investment in Ireland’s public transport, climate objectives, and urban development, generating thousands of construction and supply chain jobs. Detailed information is available on the official MetroLink website.
