Luas Finglas sets new sustainability benchmark
Transport Infrastructure Ireland's (TII) Luas Finglas extension has established a pioneering standard for sustainable light rail infrastructure in Ireland by securing the nation’s first BREEAM Infrastructure Excellent rating. This accolade recognises the project’s outstanding performance at the Strategy and Design stage, achieving an 83.73% score across categories including management, energy, carbon, water, and social value, setting a precedent for future public transport developments.

Egis, appointed by TII to lead the preliminary design and statutory process, utilised advanced public life assessment techniques to analyse and enhance open spaces along the proposed 3.9km route connecting Broombridge to Finglas. The project integrates accessible transport with 70% green track, improved cycling paths, and redesigned public areas, emphasising inclusivity, biodiversity, and long-term community benefit. It also includes four new stops and a 350-vehicle park and ride facility near St Margaret’s Road, enhancing connectivity with bus and rail services.

David Weldon, Head of Light Rail at TII, highlighted the role of BREEAM Infrastructure in embedding measurable sustainability outcomes from the outset, while Egis Director Julien Phan Hoang praised the project’s environmental innovation and community focus. The Luas Finglas extension is now a finalist in the People & Communities category of the upcoming BREEAM Awards, reflecting its success in prioritising occupant health, social inclusion, and stakeholder engagement throughout the development process.
