Government fast-tracks MetroLink and Galway road projects
Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) CEO Lorcan O’Connor has welcomed the Government’s recent decision to classify MetroLink and the Galway City Ring Road as Critical Infrastructure under newly enacted legislation. This move aims to streamline approvals, enforce cross-agency collaboration, and accelerate decision-making processes across the public sector.

Minister for Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation, Jack Chambers TD, confirmed the designation, emphasising the importance of prioritising these strategically vital projects. The new framework requires all involved public bodies to synchronise their timelines and enhance cooperation to ensure faster progress.

O’Connor highlighted the significance of this legislation in enabling TII, the National Transport Authority, and project teams to maintain steady momentum. He expressed optimism that the fast-track approval process will reduce administrative delays and support the efficient delivery of these transformative national transport assets. Collaboration with the Department of Public Expenditure, the Department of Transport, and local authorities will be key to implementing this accelerated approach.
