The Government has given the green light for MetroLink to proceed to the detailed tender phase, marking a pivotal advancement in the project’s development. This stage will involve soliciting bids from the market to select partners responsible for building and operating the new metro system. Enabling works are scheduled to commence early next year, followed by extensive tunnelling and station construction, setting the groundwork for what will be Ireland’s largest infrastructure undertaking since the 1920s.
MetroLink is set to deliver a high-capacity, electric, driverless metro railway mostly underground, stretching 19 kilometres from Estuary/Swords to Charlemont. It will serve vital locations including Dublin Airport, Ballymun, Glasnevin, Dublin City University, and major hospitals, integrating seamlessly with existing transport networks such as DART, Luas, buses, and the M1 motorway. With trains running every three minutes at peak times and stations designed for accessibility, the system aims to carry up to 20,000 passengers per direction per hour, significantly boosting the region’s transport capacity.
Government officials, including Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien and Taoiseach Micheál Martin, emphasised MetroLink’s role in reducing congestion, supporting sustainable growth, and unlocking approximately 77,000 new homes along its route, with wider benefits for up to 200,000 homes across Greater Dublin. The project’s estimated cost ranges from €14.44 billion to €17.49 billion, with benefits expected to outweigh expenses through faster journeys and reduced traffic. Further details and updates are available through the official MetroLink website, highlighting the Government’s commitment to realising this transformative infrastructure initiative.
