Four Fingal schools join Safe Routes to School
Thirteen schools across Dublin, including four in Fingal, have been named to participate in Round 5 of the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Programme, a nationwide project supported by the Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien TD, Minister of State Sean Canney TD, and the National Transport Authority (NTA).

The initiative focuses on making school journeys safer and easier for children travelling by foot, bicycle, scooter, or wheelchair. It combines infrastructure upgrades with behavioural change programmes to reduce traffic congestion, improve safety, and encourage environmentally friendly travel methods. The Fingal schools selected are Castleknock Educate Together National School, Hedgestown National School, Mary Queen of Ireland National School, and Riversdale Community College.

Since its launch in 2021, the programme has expanded to over 600 schools nationwide, with 118 now participating in Dublin alone. Fingal County Council's Director of Services for Environment, Climate Action, Active Travel & Sport, David Storey, highlighted the positive impact on families and local communities. Funded through the NTA's Active Travel Investment Programme and coordinated by An Taisce, the scheme includes improvements such as upgraded footpaths, enhanced pedestrian crossings, and distinctive road markings. Recent surveys demonstrate significant increases in cycling, walking, and scooting to school, alongside a drop in car journeys, reinforcing the programme's success in fostering healthier, safer school environments.
