The recent 'Have A Go' hurling and camogie event at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park brought a wave of enthusiasm as 120 children took to the field to experience Ireland’s national games firsthand. Many participants were new to the sport, eagerly learning how to hold a hurl, dribble, catch, and strike the sliotar amid a vibrant atmosphere filled with energy and excitement.
The evening was designed around enjoyment and education, featuring small-sided games that allowed youngsters to practice their newly acquired skills. Each child received their own sliotar, ensuring plenty of action and hands-on involvement throughout the session. Damien Sheridan, Longford Head of Games, along with dedicated coaches and volunteers, contributed greatly to the event’s success with their passion and commitment.
Adding to the excitement, the All-Ireland U17 Celtic Challenge and Lory Meagher Cup were on display, giving children a chance to admire the trophies and meet player representatives from Longford’s panels. The County Board’s support underlines the importance of nurturing grassroots participation. Families are encouraged to connect with local clubs to continue skill development, foster friendships, and celebrate the spirit of hurling and camogie.
