Ethan Dunne adapts well to new DCU rules
Ethan Dunne and DCU have made a flying start to the Ryan Cup, the senior football league for third-level institutions, currently leading Division 1 after three fixtures. Their recent victories over ATU Sligo, ATU Galway, and University of Galway have secured them a home quarter-final clash in less than two weeks.

The team has adapted smoothly to a set of experimental rules trialled in the competition, including a limit of three hand-passes per possession introduced by the Expert Advisory Group. Throughout their matches against Galway opponents, DCU players diligently monitored the hand-pass count, calling out warnings to avoid infractions. This discipline was reflected in their hand-pass to kick-pass ratio of just 1.5 to 1 against ATU Galway, a significant drop from figures between 3.8 and 5.3 to 1 observed in other competitions, according to EAG chair Kevin McStay.

Dunne, a midfielder who represented Dublin in both the National League and Championship this year, acknowledged that the rule has not posed difficulties, thanks to consistent practice during training. While he questions the necessity of the hand-pass limit, he appreciates the over-and-back rule, which restricts teams from returning to their own half after crossing the halfway line. He believes this adds tactical value, especially late in games, by pressuring opponents and limiting their available space.
