As the clocks go back this weekend, HSE South West is encouraging people to take advantage of the free winter flu and Covid-19 vaccines available to those most at risk. Vaccination is best timed before the flu and Covid-19 seasons begin, allowing approximately two weeks for immunity to develop.
Dr Michael Hanrahan, Consultant in Public Health Medicine with HSE South West, emphasised that getting vaccinated is straightforward for eligible groups. Vaccines can be accessed through participating GPs and pharmacies, while HSE vaccination teams visit nursing homes, residential care facilities, and housebound individuals. Dedicated flu vaccination clinics operate daily for healthcare workers, and the free nasal flu vaccine is offered to children aged 2 to 17 years via GPs, pharmacies, and certain school programmes.
Those eligible for the free flu vaccine include people with specific health conditions, details of which are listed online. The Covid-19 vaccine is also freely available through the same channels. For any queries regarding eligibility, individuals can contact HSELive at 1800 700 700 or visit the official HSE website for comprehensive information on both vaccinations.
