The HSE South West is calling on parents to ensure their children receive the free flu vaccine during the upcoming mid-term break. This period provides an ideal window as the vaccine requires two weeks to build full protection against influenza.
The vaccine offered is the LAIV (Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine) nasal spray, which is painless and administered via each nostril. It is available for children aged between 2 and 17 years and can be obtained from GPs, participating pharmacies, or through HSE South West vaccination teams visiting schools.
Dr Michael Hanrahan, Consultant in Public Health Medicine, emphasised the importance of vaccination, noting that flu can be severe for children and their families. Beyond protecting the individual child, vaccination helps curb the spread to parents, grandparents, teachers, and classmates. Parents are also encouraged to support good hygiene practices to further reduce the risk of viral infections. More information is available on the HSE website.
