Taoiseach honours sixteen years of European schools initiative
Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Minister of State Thomas Byrne recently welcomed pupils and teachers from Donore National School, County Meath, to Government Buildings to celebrate sixteen years of the Blue Star Programme. The special visit highlighted the remarkable educational milestone achieved by the initiative, which has introduced more than 220,000 students across 1,300 schools to the workings of the European Union since 2011. During the event, students participated in an engaging question and answer session with Minister Byrne regarding Ireland's leadership role and the current Presidency of the Council of the EU.

Praising the enduring success of the project, Taoiseach Micheál Martin emphasised how the initiative inspires young people to appreciate European values and cultural diversity through fun, interactive learning. Minister Byrne also paid tribute to the dedicated educators nationwide whose ongoing commitment ensures pupils gain a vital, early understanding of European citizenship and community spirit.

Supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and managed by European Movement Ireland, the award-winning scheme encourages children to explore history, geography, and languages through creative projects. Primary schools across the country are invited to register for the upcoming academic year, with further information and guidelines available on the official website.
