Ireland hosts key EU talks on Ukraine and Middle East
Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Helen McEntee TD, hosted an informal gathering of EU Foreign Ministers in Ireland on 1 and 2 September, welcoming representatives from Canada, Iceland, Norway, the UK, Ukraine, Switzerland, and the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee Chair. This marked one of the largest assemblies of EU foreign ministers in recent years, underscoring Ireland’s commitment to international cooperation.

The agenda focused heavily on the war in Ukraine, with Minister McEntee emphasising the urgency of supporting Ukraine’s defence capabilities and energy infrastructure ahead of winter. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha’s participation highlighted the strong international backing for Ukraine. Discussions also covered the enforcement and expansion of sanctions against Russia, alongside Ukraine’s prospective EU membership, which remains vital for European security.

Attention was also given to the deteriorating situation in the Middle East, particularly Gaza and the West Bank, where humanitarian and political crises threaten the future of a two-State solution. The meeting condemned recent Israeli settlement expansions and stressed the need for concrete responses to breaches of international law. Additionally, concerns regarding Gulf instability, including US-Iran tensions and Iran’s nuclear ambitions, were addressed, with calls for sustained EU support and diplomacy. The Ministers further deliberated on enhancing the EU’s role within the United Nations and the wider multilateral system ahead of the upcoming UN High-Level Week, aiming to bolster Europe’s influence and uphold international law consistently.
