South Dublin communities transform green waste into valuable resources
During the recent SDG Week 2026, South Dublin County Council highlighted the achievements of its Community Leaf and Green Waste Composting Pilot Programme. Held across five locations throughout the summer and autumn, the initiative brought together volunteers from nine Tidy Towns and community organisations to champion local environmental stewardship.

Participants engaged in a series of seminars and practical workshops, gaining essential skills in managing organic materials sustainably. The curriculum focused on establishing community composting systems, developing wormeries, constructing leaf mould cages, and installing educational signage. By keeping green waste within the locality, these groups successfully diverted organic matter from traditional disposal routes, converting it instead into high-quality compost and vermicompost.

This programme directly supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including those related to sustainable cities, responsible consumption, and climate action. The resulting nutrient-rich materials are scheduled to be utilised in local planting projects throughout 2027, further bolstering the council's commitment to a circular economy. Further information on these sustainable practices is available on the official South Dublin County Council website.
