Portlaoise launches innovative bike library to promote green travel
An innovative new bike library officially opened its doors outside Portlaoise Library, operating on a familiar borrowing model to help residents embrace sustainable transport. Instead of traditional literature, community members can now borrow a variety of e-bikes and cargo bikes to test out before committing to buying their own models. Spearheaded by Portlaoise Tidy Towns and backed by Laois County Council, the project received vital funding through the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment.

Local representatives and council officials praised the collaborative effort behind the scheme during the launch event. Leas-Cathaoirleach Paddy Buggy commended the community-led approach, while Director of Services Pat Delaney emphasised that the initiative makes cycling more accessible and affordable for all ages. Staff from bike suppliers Bleeper were also on hand to guide attendees through safety features and demonstrate how to operate the different models with confidence.

Residents keen to participate in the programme can register their interest by visiting the official Portlaoise Tidy Towns website or by scanning the promotional banners displayed at the local library. As active travel infrastructure and greenways continue to expand throughout the region, this project hopes to inspire more people to commute, school-run, and explore the outdoors on two wheels.
