Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Kevin Moran, announced that Sligo, Galway City, Mallow, Cavan, and Portlaoise have been selected as the five designated locations to receive new mobile water-filled flood barriers and pumps. This equipment is intended to supplement emergency stocks held by local authorities across the country. The deployment strategy aims to ensure that regional councils possess greater agility and operational flexibility when responding to severe weather events.
The procurement initiative was commissioned by the Government through the Office of Public Works following the impact of Storm Chandra earlier this year, which severely affected eastern and south-eastern regions. Working in close collaboration with the County and City Management Association alongside market suppliers, the Office of Public Works conducted a comprehensive tender competition over the summer months. Tender evaluations are currently being finalised, and official frameworks allowing local authorities to draw down the equipment will be operational by November 2026.
While the Office of Public Works has overseen the acquisition of these mobile assets, the management and physical deployment will rest with local authorities on a nationwide basis. Further information regarding ongoing flood relief schemes and national projects can be accessed via the official website at www.floodinfo.ie.
