SuperValu has initiated a recall of its smoked salmon products, specifically the 40g and 150g packs bearing a use-by date of 17 October 2026, following the detection of Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Notices alerting customers to the recall have been placed at points of sale nationwide.
Listeria monocytogenes poses a particular threat to vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, infants, older adults, and those with compromised immune systems. While healthy individuals might experience mild flu-like or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea, the infection can become severe and lead to serious complications for at-risk populations. The incubation period ranges from 3 to 70 days, with an average of three weeks before symptoms appear.
Retailers are instructed to remove the contaminated salmon from shelves immediately and display recall information prominently. Consumers are strongly advised not to consume the affected SuperValu smoked salmon packs with the specified use-by date. Further details and updates are available on the Food Safety Authority of Ireland’s official website.
