Fatal crash marks start of October bank holiday policing
An intensive Garda Roads Policing operation took place over the October bank holiday weekend from Thursday, 22nd October to Tuesday, 27th October 2026, aimed at enhancing road safety nationwide.

On the first day of the operation, Thursday 22nd October, a fatal collision occurred, adding to the year's grim total of 152 road fatalities. Law enforcement conducted numerous Mandatory Intoxicant Testing checkpoints alongside high-visibility patrols to deter risky driving behaviours.

Throughout the day, Gardaí arrested 18 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, detected over 650 speeding offences, and recorded more than 95 cases of mobile phone usage or seatbelt violations. Authorities urge all road users to exercise extreme caution, especially around vulnerable pedestrians and cyclists, reminding everyone that slowing down, avoiding distractions, and never driving while impaired are vital to saving lives this bank holiday.
