Gardaí attached to the Laois Drugs Unit and Laois Detective Unit successfully intercepted a drone flying in close proximity to the Portlaoise Prison Campus in County Laois during Tuesday afternoon's operation. The prompt intervention prevented the airborne contraband from reaching its intended destination within the high-security facility.
Upon searching the area, officers seized the drone alongside a package containing suspected cannabis, various tablets, and several mobile phones. Two males, aged in their 30s and 40s, were subsequently arrested at the scene and taken into custody at a Garda station in the Eastern Region for questioning under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996.
The recovered suspected substances have been sent to Forensic Science Ireland for comprehensive chemical analysis. An Garda Síochána confirmed that active investigations into the incident are currently ongoing as authorities examine the wider network behind the attempted delivery.
