Uisce Éireann has issued an urgent do not consume notice for all customers connected to the Arvagh Public Water Supply in County Cavan. The directive follows the identification of elevated manganese levels within the water entering the local treatment facility. Officials have emphasised that this measure is a necessary precaution to safeguard public health while technical teams carry out essential emergency repairs to resolve the contamination issue.
Residents are strictly advised against using tap water for drinking, preparing food, cooking, or brushing teeth. Crucially, boiling the water will not render it safe for consumption, and parents are cautioned against using the supply for bottle-fed infants. While the water remains suitable for personal hygiene, bathing, laundry, and flushing toilets, all existing ice cubes and filtered water should be discarded immediately. An alternative water supply will be available at the Sacred Heart Church carpark on the R198 from 6pm, and users are reminded to bring their own containers and boil this alternative water before consumption.
Thomas Gibbons of Uisce Éireann acknowledged the significant disruption this incident causes to local households, schools, and businesses. He confirmed that the organisation is working closely with the HSE to address the cause as quickly as possible. Affected customers can verify their status by entering their Eircode on the official water.ie website or by calling the 24/7 customer care line on 1800 278 278. Further updates and service alerts are available through the utility's website and social media channels.
