National Broadband plan hits key county milestones
The Department of Culture, Communications and Sport has highlighted substantial advancements in the National Broadband Plan, as November will witness milestone completions in Clare, Kerry, Wicklow, Donegal and Cork. These achievements will enable approximately 186,000 homes, farms and businesses to access high-speed fibre broadband, supported by over €697 million in government funding.

These county milestones form a crucial part of the broader National Broadband Plan, a €2.7 billion government initiative designed to deliver high-speed broadband in areas that commercial providers have not served. The completion of the primary network infrastructure in these five counties marks another important phase on track for nationwide completion by the end of 2026.

A notable event will take place in Wicklow on 19 November to mark the county’s completion milestone and the seventh anniversary of the National Broadband Plan’s contract signing. The ceremony will return to St. Kevin's School, where the contract was originally signed in 2019, highlighting the progress of Ireland’s largest rural infrastructure project since the era of rural electrification.

County completion details include:
  • Clare: 24,000 premises, €89 million investment

  • Kerry: 28,000 premises, €107 million investment

  • Wicklow: 16,000 premises, €59 million investment

  • Donegal: 35,000 premises, €128 million investment

  • Cork: 83,000 premises, €314 million investment
