The Royal Canal Greenway has been significantly enhanced following a €650,000 investment aimed at boosting visitor experiences across Kildare, Meath, Westmeath, and Longford. Officially opened on 30 October 2026 by Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Peter Burke TD, the project is part of a regenerative tourism initiative developed by Waterways Ireland with support from Fáilte Ireland and the EU Just Transition Fund.
Through 26 discovery points, improved wayfinding, five new trailhead signs, a digital visitor experience, and bespoke landmark installations, the project invites walkers and cyclists to engage more deeply with the canal's rich heritage and scenic surroundings. This strategic investment encourages longer stays and greater exploration of the local towns, communities, and natural attractions along the Greenway.
Minister Burke highlighted the canal's importance as a tourism asset and the project's role in unlocking the Midlands’ potential while supporting local businesses. Orla Carroll from Fáilte Ireland emphasised the scheme’s positive economic impact, while John McDonagh, Chief Executive of Waterways Ireland, underlined the enhancement’s value to both visitors and local communities. Clare Bannon from the Eastern and Midland Regional Assembly praised the project for celebrating heritage and fostering sustainable regional development. Further details and interview opportunities are available through the Fáilte Ireland Press Office.
