Ireland hosts landmark global bioeconomy summit
Ireland successfully hosted the Global Bioeconomy Summit at Dublin’s Convention Centre, drawing more than 1,500 delegates representing 65 countries. Ministers Martin Heydon and Darragh O’Brien, alongside Taoiseach Micheál Martin, launched the country’s first Bioeconomy Strategy, signalling Ireland’s commitment to fostering a sustainable, competitive, and innovative bioeconomy that supports climate action and circularity.

Minister Heydon emphasised the breadth of innovation showcased through satellite events, workshops, and exhibitions, highlighting the significance of the summit in advancing international cooperation and promoting bioeconomy opportunities for producers, industry, and society. Minister O’Brien noted the valuable discussions on maximising biological and waste resources to develop new business opportunities and value chains, underscoring the bioeconomy’s potential to drive energy efficiency and climate goals during Ireland’s EU Council Presidency.

The summit, organised by the International Advisory Council on the Global Bioeconomy and the Irish Government, culminated in the release of three key documents: the Summit Communiqué, Youth Communiqué, and the Global Bioeconomy Vision 2040 with Dublin Bioeconomy Goals. Additionally, European Commissioner Jessika Roswall launched the Biobased Europe Alliance, aiming to overcome obstacles to commercialising bio-based materials and mobilise substantial investment across Europe, further strengthening the continent’s transition towards a circular, resilient economy.
