€36 million boost for Midlands climate projects
Minister Darragh O’Brien has unveiled an investment exceeding €36 million for 33 climate action projects across the Midlands, marking a significant step in Ireland’s EU Just Transition Fund programme. These initiatives, led by various local authorities, are set to enhance social and environmental resilience in the region, supporting the implementation of Local Authority Climate Action Plans (LA CAPs).

The funding stems from the EU Just Transition Fund’s START scheme, co-administered by Pobal and the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment, and is designed to aid communities affected by the transition away from carbon-intensive industries. The Midlands area, encompassing counties such as Laois, Offaly, and Westmeath, has seen particular economic challenges due to the closure of peat-related industries, making this support crucial.

Among the projects receiving backing are greenway developments, renewable energy upgrades, and community amenity enhancements. Notable examples include the Ballinasloe Active Travel Scheme, the decarbonisation of leisure centres in Athy and Portlaoise, and the regeneration of brownfield sites like the Blackhall Place in Mullingar. These investments are expected to foster sustainable local economies, improve biodiversity, and promote low-carbon infrastructure, reinforcing the Midlands as an attractive place to live, work, and visit.
