First artists notified under new income scheme
The Department of Culture, Communications and Sport has announced that the first round of successful applicants for the new Basic Income for the Arts scheme will be notified this week. This groundbreaking programme provides 2,000 practising professional artists based in Ireland with €325 weekly for three years, ensuring sustained support for their creative work.

Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan TD, highlighted the significance of the scheme, which follows a successful pilot phase introduced during the pandemic by former Minister Catherine Martin. Drawing on extensive research and feedback from artists, the scheme addresses the financial uncertainties faced by many in the creative sector, aiming to enhance their wellbeing and artistic output.

Applications for the scheme closed in May 2026, with over 10,000 submissions assessed against eligibility criteria. Notifications to successful candidates will begin on 15 October, with payments starting from September 2026 or January 2027, depending on the commencement date. Recipients must complete certain formalities before receiving monthly payments of €1,413.21, and those not selected will be informed promptly. This initiative represents a major investment in Ireland’s cultural fabric and the future of its arts community.
