Killarney community nursing unit opens its doors
Minister Kieran O'Donnell officially opened the Killarney Community Nursing Unit on 6 November 2026, signalling a transformative development in care for older people in Kerry.

A modern home for older residents

The new unit boasts spacious single en-suite bedrooms, inviting communal living and dining areas, dedicated activity spaces, and accessible outdoor gardens designed to foster dignity, independence, and wellbeing for residents, their families, and visitors alike. It replaces the older residential beds at St Columbanus Hospital and rehabilitation beds at Killarney District Hospital, consolidating services into one purpose-built, state-of-the-art facility.

Collaborative transition and family dedication

The transfer of residents was carefully managed over several phases, involving meticulous coordination among healthcare staff, families, support services, and partner organisations. The HSE South West expressed gratitude to voluntary emergency services such as the Irish Red Cross, Order of Malta, and the National Ambulance Service for their vital assistance during this process.

A particularly poignant highlight of the opening was the story of Eileen Cronin, a healthcare professional with over 42 years of service at St Columbanus Hospital, who now works alongside her son Adrian Cronin at the new unit. Adrian’s journey from Healthcare Attendant to Staff Nurse exemplifies the dedication and continuity of care present within the staff.

Official remarks and future vision

Minister of State for Older People and Housing, Kieran O'Donnell TD, emphasised the Government’s commitment to ensuring quality care is accessible within communities, praising the new unit as a modern, comfortable home providing the highest standards of care. Julie O’Neill, Integrated Healthcare Area Manager, underscored the milestone this facility represents for Kerry’s healthcare services, while Director of Nursing Maire Flynn highlighted the joy in seeing residents happily settled and making the unit their home.

This opening reflects HSE South West’s ongoing investment in enhancing older persons’ services, assuring that generations to come will benefit from compassionate, person-centred care in a setting designed to feel like home.
