Residents in Clonaslee, County Laois, can expect improved flood defences following a recent funding decision by the Office of Public Works. The Department confirmed approval for a twenty-seven thousand euro contribution towards essential pre-construction studies and physical works along the Brittas Stream.
The approved project scope includes AA screening of the watercourse, detailed hydrological modelling, and the replacement of the existing culvert system. Engineers will also remove invasive vegetation and grade the stream bed from the current culvert structure down to Clodiagh to ensure efficient water flow during heavy rainfall events.
This financial support falls under the Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme, which assists local authorities with rapid solutions to localised flooding issues. The Office of Public Works typically covers ninety per cent of project costs up to the three hundred thousand euro threshold, with funding available for works designed to mitigate risk without significantly impacting flood levels elsewhere in the region.
