Minister Moran unveils Hill of Tara biodiversity plan
The Office of Public Works (OPW) officially launched the Hill of Tara Local Biodiversity Action Plan alongside the OPW Grassland Management Guidance today, 29 October, at the historic Hill of Tara in County Meath.

These documents demonstrate OPW’s dedication to conserving biodiversity across its heritage sites while safeguarding the archaeological and natural significance of these treasured locations. Minister of State with responsibility for the OPW, Kevin "Boxer" Moran, emphasised the importance of these publications in balancing ecological protection with heritage preservation, noting the Hill of Tara’s unique status and the practical steps outlined to enhance biodiversity.

The Hill of Tara, a site with human activity dating back to 3000 BC, has profound archaeological and cultural importance. The Local Biodiversity Action Plan, developed from recent ecological surveys and audits, proposes measures such as traditional hay meadow management, scrub cutting, bat box installation, and hedgerow care to maintain and enrich species diversity across its 28 hectares. Complementing this, the Grassland Management Guidance offers evidence-based recommendations on managing diverse grassland types throughout OPW estates, promoting species richness and ecosystem health while aligning with national biodiversity and climate objectives.
