Public consultation launched on Ireland’s digital future

The Department of Culture, Communications and Sport has initiated a public consultation to shape Ireland’s digital connectivity goals up to 2030. This initiative focuses on expanding gigabit broadband and 5G coverage nationwide, enhancing infrastructure for homes and businesses.

Public consultation launched on Ireland’s digital future
The Department of Culture, Communications and Sport has officially opened a public consultation on its updated Digital Connectivity and Infrastructure Strategy, inviting input from stakeholders and the general public to help define Ireland’s digital ambitions through to 2030.

Building on previous progress

The refreshed strategy aims to extend the successes of the original 2022–2026 plan, which saw considerable advancements in connectivity infrastructure and technology adoption. Notably, over half a million rural premises have been connected via the National Broadband Ireland (NBI) network under the National Broadband Plan, delivered on time and within budget. Additionally, 92% of all premises now have access to Gigabit broadband.

Key priorities and national alignment

The updated strategy emphasises three main priorities centred on expanding digital infrastructure. It supports Ireland’s broader National Digital and AI Strategy, Digital Ireland: Connecting our People, Securing our Future, released earlier this year, aiming to position the country as a leader in digital innovation and artificial intelligence. The infrastructure pillar of this national plan is central to the strategy’s implementation.

Minister Peter Burke highlighted the importance of digital connectivity in everyday life, noting that this strategy will ensure Ireland remains well equipped to meet future connectivity demands. He urged industry representatives, businesses, communities, and individuals to participate actively in the consultation process.

The consultation period will run for four weeks, closing at 5pm on 4 December 2026. Participants can submit their views through the online survey available on the Department’s official website.
