Strong public backing for Luas Cork rail plan
Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) has published the Luas Cork Preferred Route 2026 Post-Consultation Report, capturing insights from an eight-week public engagement period on the proposed light rail line connecting Ballincollig and Mahon Point. The consultation, which took place from 17 April to 12 June 2026, attracted 1,733 submissions and saw 1,660 people attend various public events and stakeholder briefings across Cork, illustrating significant community interest.

The report reveals overwhelming support for enhanced public transport in Cork City, with 85.2% of respondents backing the development of Luas Cork. While there is strong approval for the project, feedback also called for refinements concerning route alignment, access, traffic management, and the potential impact on established communities, particularly in areas such as Bishopstown, Ballincollig, Ballintemple, Blackrock, and along the River Lee.

Looking ahead, TII will use these findings to guide the preliminary design phase, continuing collaboration with communities, stakeholders, and public representatives. Future steps include further design adjustments, environmental and technical evaluations, and preparation for the Railway Order planning process, which will incorporate statutory public consultation opportunities. The full report and further details are available on the official Luas Cork website.
