University Hospital Galway launches multilingual support for bereaved parents
University Hospital Galway recently rolled out a thoughtful new multilingual information leaflet designed to offer practical guidance and support to families in the immediate aftermath of a child's passing. This sensitive initiative aims to ensure that grieving parents can access clear, compassionate, and easy-to-understand information when navigating an unimaginably difficult period.

The newly developed resource complements the hospital's existing bereavement booklet, which traditionally offers comprehensive support through the various stages of grief. While the established booklet guides families long-term, the fresh leaflet focuses specifically on immediate practical steps and essential contact details. Financial backing from the Irish Hospice Foundation and the hospital's Patient Comfort Fund enabled the creation of these multilingual materials.

Karen Leonard, assistant director of nursing for children's services, emphasised the importance of delivering timely information in languages families can readily understand. Alice Anderson of the Irish Hospice Foundation further praised the locally driven project, highlighting how accessible end-of-life care profoundly enhances the experiences of families facing profound tragedy.
