Minister reviews last Irish infantry group for UN mission
Minister for Defence Helen McEntee TD recently reviewed the 69th Infantry Group of the Defence Forces at Aiken Barracks in Dundalk as they prepared for deployment to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). This review parade represents a historic milestone, as this group will be the last Irish infantry unit to serve in Lebanon, ending almost five decades of uninterrupted Irish peacekeeping efforts there.

Commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Cormac Brady, the group has undergone thorough mission-specific training to ensure readiness for their assignment. Throughout their deployment, personnel will uphold Ireland’s longstanding tradition of distinguished service within UNIFIL, while supporting the gradual and orderly withdrawal of the mission and Ireland’s infantry commitment.

Minister McEntee highlighted the significant role UNIFIL has played in establishing Ireland's global peacekeeping reputation and honoured the generations of Defence Forces members who have served since Ireland’s initial involvement in 1978. She also expressed gratitude to the families of deployed personnel for their essential support. Although the Irish infantry’s time in UNIFIL is concluding, Ireland remains dedicated to international peace and security through ongoing peace support operations worldwide.
