Minister McEntee recently conveyed her heartfelt condolences following the passing of Gerard Collins, a highly esteemed former TD, MEP, and minister who twice held the position of Ireland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs. Beyond this role, he also served as Minister for Justice and Minister for Posts and Telegraphs, earning respect across all political parties in the Oireachtas.

As Ireland approaches the closing months of its current Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Minister McEntee highlighted Gerard Collins’s crucial involvement in orchestrating and delivering the 1990 EU Presidency. His efforts notably included advancing a European consensus on the reunification of Germany, a landmark political undertaking in the aftermath of the Cold War.

The Minister extended her sympathies to Gerard’s wife, Hilary, and the wider family, including his nephew and her ministerial colleague, Niall Collins. In honour of Gerard Collins’s memory, flags at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade will be flown at half-mast on Thursday as he is laid to rest.
