EU affairs committee to meet UN rapporteur on Palestine
The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs convened on 4 November 2026 in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House to meet with United Nations Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese. The focus was the deteriorating human rights and humanitarian crisis in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and the implications for international law.

Barry Ward TD, Cathaoirleach of the Committee, emphasised the significance of hearing directly from the UN Special Rapporteur. He underlined the necessity of evaluating the European Union’s obligations under international law, including the EU-Israel Association Agreement and the implementation of the International Court of Justice’s July 2024 Advisory Opinion. Ward also highlighted the critical need for accountability via international justice mechanisms.

Ward noted Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union as a timely opportunity to influence the EU’s approach to upholding human rights and international law. He stressed that the EU must ensure its policies consistently reflect its commitments to these principles. The Committee looks forward to continuing substantive discussions on the humanitarian situation, the EU’s responsibilities, and the pursuit of lasting peace. The meeting was available to watch live on the Oireachtas website and smartphone app.
