Exploring Ireland's Trees and Fungi in Rathfarnham
Recent biodiversity events in Rathfarnham Castle Park and Massy's Estate offered a wonderful opportunity to explore Ireland’s native trees and fungi. Organised by Claire Hamilton and Codie Preston with support from South Dublin County Council and IPB Insurance through the LEAF initiative, these gatherings attracted nature lovers keen to connect with their local environment.

At the Native Tree Walk & Talk in Rathfarnham Castle Park, attendees discovered the diversity of native Irish trees, learned to identify an Oak Gall caused by a Gall Wasp, and enjoyed an expert game of conkers. Meanwhile, over 30 participants joined Andrew Smith for the Fascinating Fungi Walk & Talk in Massy's Wood, where they uncovered the mysteries of fungi, including which species to avoid, such as the pungent stinkhorn mushroom.

Looking ahead, the final two Biodiversity Talks will take place on Sunday 18 October 2026. The Native Irish Bird Walk & Talk will be held at Sean Walsh Memorial Park at 12pm, followed by the River Biodiversity Walk & Talk at Jim Lawlor Bridge in Dodder Valley Park at 3pm. Further details and tickets are available through the official event website.
