Thirty-six years on: new appeal in Dessie Fox murder case
On a quiet Sunday afternoon in September 1990, Dessie Fox’s life was brutally cut short in a daylight ambush that shocked communities across Kildare and beyond. The 47-year-old on-course bookmaker, originally from Dungannon in Co. Tyrone, had set out from his home that morning with a simple plan: to attend a race meeting at the Curragh. His route took him through familiar roads, passing through towns like Navan and Kilcock before reaching Prosperous village, where he stopped to pick up a newspaper. Within moments of leaving Connolly’s Newsagents, his journey took a horrifying turn.

As Mr Fox returned to his white Mercedes parked near Dagwelds, a red Toyota Carina bearing false plates drew dangerously close behind him. The car’s occupants unleashed a barrage of shotgun fire, shattering the rear indicator and puncturing the front tyre. Despite Mr Fox’s desperate attempt to reverse to safety, his vehicle swerved off the road and came to a halt. The attackers then approached and fired a single handgun shot through the open passenger door, striking both legs of the defenceless man. He died at the scene, leaving behind a community stunned by the senseless violence.

The motive behind the killing remains tied to a robbery that followed a chillingly calculated plan. The assailants made off with a black leather briefcase containing cash and documents bearing Mr Fox’s name, along with a Motorola car phone and his car keys. A canvas money bag, later recovered, hinted at the financial stakes involved. The stolen Toyota Carina used in the attack was abandoned the following day in Blanchardstown, while a grey Mitsubishi Gallant was seen travelling in convoy with the attackers. Despite 17 arrests in the immediate aftermath and two further suspects detained in 2018, the case remains open—and Gardaí are urging anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward.
