Ministers review national hot school meals programme standards
Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary has officially published the results of two independent studies focused on the national hot school meals programme. These reports provide a comprehensive analysis of current food standards, alongside feedback gathered from a wide-ranging survey involving students, parents, teachers, and food suppliers. The initiative remains a cornerstone of government policy, with an annual state investment of €300 million designed to alleviate household costs and improve educational outcomes.

During the announcement, Minister Calleary emphasised that while the programme has seen rapid expansion, these studies were commissioned to address concerns regarding food quality and waste. Findings indicate a largely positive reception, with high levels of satisfaction reported across the board. The Minister confirmed his intention to immediately implement the recommendations provided by the independent experts to ensure the scheme continues to operate at the highest possible standard.

Minister for Education and Youth Hildegarde Naughton also expressed her support, noting that the provision of balanced meals is essential for pupil wellbeing and academic participation. She highlighted that these insights will be instrumental in aligning future service delivery with best practices in nutrition. Full details of the Nutrition Review and the IPSOS Behaviour and Attitudes survey are available on the official Department of Social Protection website.
