Fingal County Council confirmed the appointment of Councillor Kate Relihan this week after her co-option to the Castleknock Local Electoral Area on Monday 14 September. The move fills the vacancy left by the resignation of Councillor Helen Redwood, who had represented the area for many years.
Mayor of Fingal, Councillor Tony Murphy, paid tribute to Redwood’s decades of dedicated service to the Dublin 15 community, acknowledging her contributions to the Council and wishing her a speedy recovery. Speaking after her own appointment, Relihan echoed the sentiment, describing Redwood as a "fighter for change" and a "diligent Councillor" who left a lasting mark on local politics.
Relihan, who also works as a teacher in a local Gaelscoil, outlined her priorities for the role, including accelerating the delivery of social and affordable housing, expanding childcare provision, and addressing the cost-of-living crisis. She also highlighted her commitment to promoting the Irish language across Fingal, pledging to engage with fellow councillors on initiatives to support its use in public services and community programmes.
