An Garda Síochána have initiated a murder investigation following a devastating house fire in the Birchwood district of Waterford City that occurred shortly after 5am on Tuesday, 13 October 2026. The fire tragically resulted in the deaths of two adults, a man and a woman, along with two of their children.
Two additional children were rescued from the scene and are currently receiving critical medical care in hospital. The circumstances surrounding the blaze have led Gardaí to treat the incident as an arson attack, intensifying the investigation.
An incident room has been established at Waterford Garda Station, with a senior investigating officer appointed to lead the inquiry.
